Shoji Screens
Japanese shoji can be used for decorative and functional purposes. I have built and installed two screens for our house, the screens set in the window openings in our master bathroom. The white screens diffuse the light as it enters the room and evenly lights our bathroom during the day.

I used 'Yes Paste' on these two screens and the lamps I made.

I spoke with a Japanese furniture builder at the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC and he recommended using sweet rice flour mixed with water. This is closer then the traditional method of pulping sticky rice with a paddle. Rice flour can be picked up at many international markets.

For paper I use washi, rice paper. It can be purchased from some art and craft stores in rolls. It is also available online and comes in many different shapes and sizes. You can also get paper with designs, while remaining white. Silk screened washi is excellent for accenting larger pieces, most I have seen come in 3X3 foot rolls.
