Wayne
drove into St. Clair, looked around a little in the
quiet neighborhoods and the tourist streets near the
Lake bluff, got some groceries from one of the old-fashioned
markets, and got back to Bolling's house in the early
afternoon. The air was warm, humid, and very still,
bringing the sounds of birds singing and the quiet surf
with an almost unnatural clarity. He went swimming.
The distance haze had now had taken on a golden tint,
perhaps from the smudge of humidity that had accumulated
around the sun.
