onXXX functions

Howdy,
I'm trying to create a select box that calls an event handler 
whenever the user selects a new item in, it it not [MULTIPLE].
None of the event handler I have seen seem to do this. OnChange 
does not get called until focus is lost.
Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated.
