erm, window references ... i'm confused

hi all,

i've spawned a new window as a sort of floating navigation bar (don't
ask). when i want to refer to some properties of the ancestor (the
spawner, as opposed to the spawnee) window, what i've read from the
official docs seems to indicate that the object i want to use is "top."
however, when i use "top.content.location=foo.html" to put "foo" in the
spawner's frame named "content," it simply spawns a *third* window and
puts the doc in there. what is the proper syntax to refer to the original
spawner's "content" frame?

also, once this is sorted out, i assume i can put stuff in the spawner's
status bar, right?
