This is a quick intro to the wiki. The default FrontPage is a bit verbose, but useful if you need more info. You can also learn more starting at the original wiki's [PPR]FrontPage.

To edit this page, click on the Edit Text link at the bottom, or the little word balloon at the top. You can write a perfectly good wiki page with just text, but you'll probably want to add in links and headers and all the other cool HTML features. Wiki has its own simple markup language which is like a shorthand version of HTML. It's a good example of the 80/20 rule - it gives you 80% of the features you want, with 20% of the complexity. As with HTML, you can learn all the special features on a page just by editing it. This page demonstrates most of the basic markup elements, and a couple of the more advanced ones. For more info, see HelpOnEditing.

One of the cooler things about this wiki is that it does headings, with an automatic table of contents:

  1. Security
  2. Section Headers
    1. Sub-section Header
  3. Hyperlinks
    1. Wiki Links
    2. Internet Links
  4. Types of Type
  5. Bullets
    1. Un-numbered
    2. Numbered
  6. Images
  7. Tables
  8. Special Cool Stuff
  9. Caveat
  10. Feedback

The pages on this wiki are only sorta secure. They're protected by a password, but that password may be leaked by careless or overly generous users. Information here is quite unlikely to be harvested by spammers, but it may be seen by relative strangers.

If you can see it, you can edit it. Any page on the wiki can be edited by anyone. This sounds scary, but it works pretty well in practice. This wiki keeps a revision history for each page, so if someone messes up your page, you can see who did it (or at least what IP address they came from) and what it looked like before they changed it. You can read more about [PPR]WhyWikiWorks and [PPR]WhyWikiWorksNot.

Section Headers

By default, all of the headers are numbered. I find this really annoying. If you want to get rid of them, you need to put this
## this turns off the section numbers
#pragma section-numbers off
right at the beginning of each page.

You can have up to 5 level of sections - just add more equals signs. It's easier to leave them all flush-left, but you can indent them...

Wiki Links

Wiki automatically makes any word in camel caps, such as "ObscureOrganization", a link. If the page already exists, clicking on the link will go to it. If the page doesn't exist, clicking on the link will take you to a page that will help you create it. If you want to make a link that's only one word, or isn't in camel caps, do it like this: foo

Internet Links

Hey, it's a [WWW]link to my home page

Types of Type

italics, bold, bold italics, superscript, plus smileys :) ;) and other icons <!>

  1. one

  2. two

    1. three

    2. four

really pretty clunky

Special Cool Stuff

One of the most useful things when you're working with a group of people is the RecentChanges page. This is a special page that shows what pages have been changed recently, and by whom. You can click on the little 3-D glasses next to each entry to see the most recent changes.

Some of the fancy stuff on this Wiki will be broken until I can get Richard to upgrade Python.
