We don't know much about golf.
We do know that we suck at it. Unfortunately, in all the time that we're not writing reviews
for cynical.com or doing "research" for cynical.com, we actually have a job and go to school as well.
So there's not much time for playing golf, even though it's fun.
We also don't know much about Tiger Woods, except that he's an exceptional golf
player. He's also failed to annoy us in at least two commercials: this one and the
one where he bounces a golfball on his club. Of course, I hear some grumbling in
the back about some "I'm Tiger Woods" commercial, and maybe an American Express
commercial, but like most of the public, we have a short attention span. These
new commercials make us like Tiger Woods.
For those of you who haven't visited the above link or seen the spot we're referring
to, it goes something like this: At a driving range, Tiger Woods comes up and takes
the first spot. The guy behind him mimicks his swing as both their balls are driven
far and straight. With each successive stroke, more golfers join the line, until
the entire range is hitting perfect 300 yard drives. All this is to the accompanyment
of "The Rites of Spring" (We think it's that but are too lazy to find out).
When Tiger picks up his clubs and walks away, the range loses it, sending balls
every which way, into trees and carts.
Simple, I know, but also masterful. Nike has been bombarding us with attitude and
slogans for so long that it is hard for them to get any message across at all. 'Just
Do It?' What the hell is that supposed to mean? Who knows? This return to simple
feel-good advertising is welcome, and, true to cynical.com's highest aim, entertaining.
We don't mind watching this commercial at all, even if it is Nike.
Rating: 25 seconds. A very good commercial.
Conclusion: Just Do It. Sorry, couln't resist. Seriously: Buy Nike
