Reviewed today: Coke Card

It seems that our friends over at the Coca-Cola company just don't get it. We fondly recall the halcyon days of our youth when summer meant a new Coke promotion. The promotion was blissfully predictable: look under the cap and win things. This year they have created what at first sounded like a cool idea: the Coke Card.

It has a nice ring to it, but what, exactly, are you supposed to do with your Coke Card? On their website at www.iydkydg.com, you can find out where you can use your Coke Card for different deals. So rather than looking under the cap to find at best 2 free movie tickets, we can take our Coke Card down to one of several movie theaters where, if we buy a Mega Jumbo Coke and a Mega Jumbo Popcorn (approximate price $30), we will get an additional small Coke FREE!

Of course, this begs the question of how important that extra 12 ounces will be after you've finished off the first 48. Nearly every other "deal" has a similar quality. They're fine if you were going to buy the product anyway (like a coke and a deli-central sandwich from 7-11), but the payoff (free bag of M&M's) just isn't worth going out of your way.

Then there is the slogan, "If you don't know, you don't go", which is where the iydkydg came from. Presumably Coke decided it would be too hard to get a domain with any meaning to it, so they just made something up. But there is something nice about the phrase. If you don't know, you don't go. Right. If you don't know about the lame "deals" you're supposed to get with the Coke Card, you don't go to the stores foolish enough to be sucked into this lame promotion. Of course, the opposite is also true, and doesn't even break the acronym: "If you DO know, you (still) don't go."

Rating: 5 seconds. This commentary is mostly about the campaign. The commercials promoting it were highly unmemorable, except that they pronounced the above acronym.

Conclusion: While we still recommend that you Buy Coke, because it is the only palatable cola product, we also advice that you Don't use the Coke Card.
