JavaScript and Unix Server

Is there any way to read from and write to a file on a Unix server from
JavaScript?  I want to write a page that has a textarea that has the
contents of a file on the server loaded into it and a save button that
writes the text in the textarea out to the file.  Is there any way to do
this without having to use CGI?
